Security by Stephen Amidon
Security begins with Hans van den Broek, his wife, Rachel, and their son, Jake, being forced out of their New York City neighborhood after the 9/11 attacks, and moving into the Chelsea Hotel. Hans is a financial analyst who was raised in The Securitys and lived for a while in London (where he met Rachel), and moved to his adopted home of the United States. Fearful of another attack and unsure about their marriage, Rachel takes Jake back to London. Hans finds himself adrift in New York, and missing any sort of anchor to his life, he turns to his boyhood love of cricket. There meets the charismatic Chuck Ramkissoon, a Trinidadian who engages in shady business dealings, but who is driven by the American dream and is sure he can manipulate the system to deliver it for him. It lures Hans into a new way of life of which he'd been unaware, but one that carries its own risks. Stephen Amidon's novel has received positive reviews with the New York Times saying, "Security is a bit like the wily and ebullient Chuck Ramkissoon. It has more life inside it than 10 very good novels."
