Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde
In Shades of Grey, the world is ruled by a Colortocracy. Every person's class status and occupation is defined by the colors they can see, and their status within any color group is determined by their particular color perception. Eddie Russett comes from a family of reds who have lost status due to a poorly-chosen marriage by an ancestor to a grey. The Russetts have been slowly rebuilding their redness and Eddie is expecting to marry Constance Oxblood and inherit her family's string business. Eddie is exiled to the Outer Fringe town of East Carmine, where he meets Jane, a grey woman. Things are not what they seem in East Carmine and Jane holds heretical beliefs that everyone should be equal regardless of color perception, but Eddie finds himself falling for her. Which doesn't bode well for his future. Jasper Fforde's novel has received mixed reviews with BookPage saying, "With romance, adventure, conspiracies and plenty of laughs, Shades of Grey is high-energy storytelling that offers something for every reader."
