Shipwreck by Louis Begley
Shipwreck tells the story of John North, a prize-winning novelist in a Paris bar, baring his soul to a stranger. North comes from a privileged background, as does his wife, a doctor who does pediatric research. He claims to adore his wife and lives a satisfactory WASPish life with her. He arrives in France suffering from a crisis of self-doubt about his writing, and falls into an affair with a promiscuous temptress. As he tries to explain and rationalize his behavior to the stranger, it's obvious to North that his life is coming apart at the seams. Louis Begley's novel has received mixed reviews. The Washington Post says, "Shipwreck is at once a classic, even Jamesian novel of character and a highly erotic, very grown-up modern thriller -- in other words, another triumph for Louis Begley."
