Shroud by John Banville
In Shroud, Axel Vander is an esteemed literary critic and he's also a cruel misanthrope who has based his murky past upon a series of lies. When he receives a letter from a young woman named Cass Cleave that challenges the veracity of one of those lies, he flies off to Turin (home of Christ's shroud) to meet her. Vander decides the best way to deal with the woman is to seduce her. This sets off an unexpected series of events and the telling of his story of his life and how he came to be who he is. It turns out that Vander doesn't even know all the secrets of his past. Shroud is a powerful novel from acclaimed Irish novelist John Banville whom Salon.com calls "a ravishingly beautiful writer."
