Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood by Koren Zailckas
Smashed is Koren Zailckas' memoir of her alcoholic consumption from her teenage years to young adulthood. Just 23 when she wrote this book, Zailckas recounts her experiences with her first drinks at 14 and binge drinking throughout college. It wasn't a full out throttle into alcoholism, but a step-by-step descent into a world where almost everything in her social life revolved around drinking alcohol. Yet it was not a behavior that was outside the norm, but instead was acceptable behavior, especially in college where women drank as much, if not more, than the men. Now that she's graduated from college and stepped back from her alcohol abuse, she can see the effects it had on her relationships and mental state. Smashed has received positive reviews with the Associated Press saying, "Even with all the studies on the topic, Smashed seems to offer the best examination of the relationship between women and alcohol in a clear and brilliant way. Zailckas' honest voice and journalistic eye for detail lift the veil off this lifestyle and show what a universal experience it can be for some women."
