The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey
The Snow Child is set in 1920 when Jack and Mabel come to rural Alaska as homesteaders. They find it much more difficult than they expected, and it does little to ease their pain at their inability to have children. One night they build a snow girl and festoon it with mittens and a scarf. The next morning finds just a clump of snow and the mittens and scarf are gone. They spy the missing garments on a girl in the woods and wonder if she's their snow child come to life. They try to civilize the feral girl, but she's a creature of the woods. She may be, though, their last chance to have a child. Eowyn Ivey's debut novel has received positive reviews with the Cleveland Plain Dealer saying, "But, as many fables warn us: Watch out for what you wish. Darkness and light take a physical and mental hold, weaving together great hope and great sadness. In Ivey's capable hands, The Snow Child will keep you frozen in its spell until the very last word."
