Snowleg by Nicholas Shakespeare
Peter Hithersay is the son of an Englishwoman who had a one-night affair with an East German political dissident. As a young man, he travels to Leipzig during the Cold War and has a passionate one-night stand with a woman he knows only as Snowleg. She tells him she wants to escape East Germany and he offers to help her, but then he panics and leaves her behind. Ashamed, he doesn't return for 20 years until after Germany is reunited. After years of regret and to atone for his sin, he returns in search of the woman he might have loved. Nicholas Shakespeare's novel is a mix of romance and search for identity against the backdrop of life behind the Iron Curtain. Snowleg has received mostly positive reviews with The Guardian calling it "a thoroughly conventional romance novel: a heart-warming tale of rich, enabling coincidence and conquering love; love without frontiers."
