Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk
In Snuff, porn star Cassie Wright is on the downside of her career and is convinced to try a publicity stunt where she'll have sex with 600 men in a row. Cassie is not sure she'll survive the stunt. Each man is given one minute and they are grouped en masse in the green room waiting for their turn. Mr. 72 is a man who's convinced he was conceived during the filming of a porn movie and thinks Cassie might be his mother. Mr. 137 is a former television star whose career was torpedoed by his own porn past. Mr. 600 is Branch Bacardi, who was the first man to have sex with Cassie in a porn movie, so he gets to finish her career. Author Chuck Palahniuk lets us know early in the novel that one of these characters will not survive. Snuff has received mostly positive reviews with the Rocky Mountain News saying, "Snuff is almost completely character-driven - a risky proposition for most authors. Not Palahniuk. The desperation and complexity of the characters drives the narrative, making Snuff a page-turner filled with tension and transgression."
