The Song Before It Is Sung by Justin Cartwright
In 1944, Prussian aristocrat Adam von Trott was hung by the Nazis for his participation in a plot to murder Adolf Hitler. He was educated in Britain as a Rhodes Scholar and was a friend of the famous Jewish philosopher, Isaiah Berlin. Adam von Trott had joined the Nazi party at the beginning of the war and worked from within the party to undermine it, and Hitler ordered the filming of his death. In The Song Before It Is Sung, 35-year-old former Rhodes Scholar Conrad Senior is given the private papers of Oxford professor and philosopher, Elya Mendel, which details his friendship and falling out with Axel von Gottberg, who fills in for the role of Adam von Trott. While he discovers the forces of history and friendship that led to von Gottberg's death, Conrad Senior must also struggle the forces within his own life, including his estranged wife who is pregnant with a baby that may or may not be his. Justin Cartwright's novel has received mostly positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "This is a deeply thoughtful novel, written with originality and force."
