The Starboard Sea by Amber Dermont

The Starboard Sea is set in 1987 just before the stock market crash. Jason Prosper, from a wealthy Manhattan family, had to leave an elite prep school after the death of his roommate and sailing partner, Cal. For his senior year, he attends Bellingham Academy, a prep school for kids with second chances. Jason is almost immediately involved in a sailing accident, and he decides to stay land bound. He falls for Aidan, who has her own troubled past. He begins to bond with the other boys, when a hurricane threatens to undo everything he thought he knew. Amber Dermont's debut novel has received positive reviews with the New York Times saying, "It is a rich, quietly artful novel that is bound for deep water, with questions of beauty, power and spiritual navigation as its main concerns. The title refers not to the right side of a boat but to the right course through life, and the immense difficulty of finding and following it."
