State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
In State of Wonder, Marina Singh does research for a drug company. She shares an office with Anders and is having an affair with the CEO. Anders is sent to check on Dr. Annick Swenson who is doing research on an Amazon tribe of women who apparently never reach menopause. When Anders is reported dead and the CEO worried about the new drug that could make the company a fortune, Marina is sent to the Amazon. What others don't know is that Swenson was the reason Marina never became a doctor. Once she's reached the Amazon, Marina loses everything she has and can't find Swenson. She's lost in the jungle in pursuit of a woman who'd rather not be found. Ann Patchett's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the New York Daily News saying, "Ann Patchett's State of Wonder is the most improbably lovely novel. Yes, it's profound and complex and all that. But that a book about a pharmaceutical company poised to exploit a tribe in the Amazon can reduce a reader to a state of awe? Oh my."
