The Successor by Ismail Kadare
The Successor is a novel based on the mysterious death of Mehmet Shehu, the hand-picked successor to Albania's communist dictator, Enver Hoxha. Mehmet Shehu was the Prime Minister and his ascension to the Hoxha's post was so assured that he was called The Successor. His death was initially unknown to be murder or suicide, but it nevertheless cast suspicion among several people in both politics and his personal life. In a society plagued by old rivalries, grudges, and political terror, suspicion genders more doubt and suspicion, eventually leading to a goverment unable to function. Ismail Kadare's novel of political intrigue that still exists in many governments has received positive reviews with Scotland on Sunday saying, "With this short novel, Kadare evokes a place of smoke, mirrors and arbitrary execution, and does it with elegance and compassion."
