The Sucker's Kiss by Alan Parker

In The Sucker's Kiss, film director Alan Parker tells the story of Tommy Moran, an Irish boy in San Francisco who first learns to pick pockets during the 1906 earthquake. Tommy hits the road to avoid being sent to a home for recalcitrant boys, and his pickpocket adventures lead him around the American west. Love finds Tommy in Napa Valley when he meets Effie, the daughter of an Armenian wine maker. Tommy decides to settle down and help out with the family business, which Prohibition has hit hard. Oddly enough, though, the amount of wine needed by the Catholic Church has mushroomed. The Sucker's Kiss is the story of friendship, corruption, and an outsider trying to find a place to call home. The Telegraph says, "It is as good a historical yarn as I have read in a long time: straightforward in its essentials, but richly textured."
