Summerland by Michael Chabon

Michael Chabon (author of Wonder Boys and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay) brings us a new novel aimed at both teens and adults. Ethan Feld plays baseball, rather terribly, in Summerland, on the tip of Clam Island, where it never rains. Ethan's father is kidnapped by the evil Coyote, a shape-shifter and trickster who wants to bring about the end of the universe. Ethan and his friends (both human and fairy-like) set off on a quest through the different worlds that make up the universe to save his father, and the universe, by playing baseball. As in most fantasy quests, they visit strange worlds with odd characters they've never imagined and must survive countless dangers to arrive at the grand finale, the baseball game that will decide the fate of the universe. The Washington Post calls Summerland "a rollicking and fine tale, well told and with moments of real magic, peril, adventure, terror and triumph."
