The Sunday Philosophy Club by Alexander McCall Smith
With The Sunday Philosophy Club, Alexander McCall Smith, at least for the time being, leaves behind Mme. Ramotswe and the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in Botswana and begins a new series set in Edinburgh, Scotland. Isabel Dalhousie is an intensely curious and moralizing middle-aged woman who sees a handsome young men plunge to his death from a balcony in a concert hall. While about town, she begins to ask questions about the young man and begins to suspect that perhaps something more sinister than an accident occurred. Isabel also faces a moral dilemma about a secret she's uncovered about her niece's boyfried. Despite despising him, she's not sure the correct action is to tell her niece. Alexander McCall Smith has begun another gentle series, where the ethics and morality play center stage instead of good and evil. The Sunday Philosophy Club has received positive reviews with the New York Times saying, "But this book is a clear demonstration of Mr. McCall Smith's own philosophy: that there is wisdom in inviting readers into a world of kindness, gentility and creature comforts. Offer the literary equivalent of herbal tea and a cozy fire. They'll come back for more."
