Sunnyside by Glen David Gold
Sunnyside begins on Nov. 12, 1916 when mass hallucinations created hundreds of sightings of Charlie Chaplin across the country. Glen David Gold's novel follows three parallel storylines. First is Leland Wheeler, a lighthouse keeper with dreams of being an actor in Hollywood, but ends up in France during World War I. Next is Hugo Black who becomes involved with America's battle against the Bolsheviks in northern Russia. The final storyline follows Chaplin as he struggles with his Little Tramp character, accusations of cowardice for not fighting in the war, and the founding of United Artists as the film studios begin to take hold in Hollywood. Sunnyside has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "For all its heavy demands, Sunnyside offers a wealth of wit and pathos and insight, and who better to guide us through this transformational moment in history than the Little Tramp?"
