The Testing Of Luther Albright by MacKenzie Bezos
Luther Albright is an emotionally repressed man. He's a civil engineer who design dams and built his own house, but he's more comfortable fixing things than interact in any meaningful way with his wife who grows ever distant and his son who grows increasingly defiant. An earthquake unsettles his life, damaging his house and creating questions about the stability of a dam he designed. At the same time his son forces him to undergo a series of tests, pushing Luther to respond in any way to his challenges. It also brings to light Luther's problems with his own father. The Testing Of Luther Albright is the debut novel from MacKenzie Bezos and has received mostly positive reviews. The San Francisco Chronicle says, "The plot is muted, the character study careful if at times repetitive, but the details and descriptions are intriguing, as is the foundation of sabotage (self and actual) on which Luther and his family construct their lives."
