That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo
That Old Cape Magic takes place in the year between two weddings. The first wedding takes place on Cape Cod, where Jack Griffin used to vacation with his parents when he was child. His parents were Ivy League snobs, English professors forced to work in the Midwest, while Griffin gave up screenwriting to become a professor at a prestigious college. He travels to the Cape with his father's ashes in his trunk and suffering a mid-life crisis. His life with his wife has gone as planned, but has left him feeling empty. A year later, his daughter is getting married in Maine, and Griffin now has his mother's ashes in his trunk too. Richard Russo's novel has received mixed reviews with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette saying, "I believe I have read every word of fiction Russo has published. None of it has disappointed. The ending here may stray more than in the others toward Hollywood cute and satisfying, but it also does not stray far from the honest and believable. As for the readable, it is, as always, right on target."
