The Fall by Simon Mawer
In The Fall, Rob Dewar and Jamie Matthewson are old friends and mountain climbing partners until Jamie dies in a fall during a solo climb without ropes or a helmet. Rob sets out to try to understand the story behind Jamie's climb that day and to console his widow, with whom he'd shared with Jamie in the past. To tell the story that led to the fall, Simon Mawer moves the action back and forth in time between London during World War II and present-day Wales. The two families' stories and loves are intertwined during those 60 years and Rob comes to understand how the betrayals and lies of the past have colored the present. The New York Times says of The Fall, "By combining the adrenaline-filled appeal of a mountaineering adventure with the emotional clout of a love story, Simon Mawer has created an exemplary model of that quaint old relic -- the satisfying read."
