The Holy by Daniel Quinn
Daniel Quinn (author of Ishmael) likes to write speculative fiction that challenges the reader to think about history and religion. He returns to this theme in The Holy where private investigator Howard Scheim is hired to find the gods who tempted the Israelites during ancient times. Convinced it's a crazy assignment, his research nevertheless brings him strange and surreal experiences that suggest he might be onto something. The novel is a mixture of horror, mystery, and fantasy that careens through philosophy and morality. The San Francisco Chronicle says, "Overly complicated, sometimes too pleased with itself, yet often entertaining and profound, The Holy defies expectations. Readers may not be wholly satisfied by Quinn's shaggy god story, but they're not likely to forget it, either."
