This One Is Mine by Maria Semple
In This One Is Mine, David Parry is a successful rock band manager who is obsessed with his career and the trappings of success. His wife, Violet, has given up her career as a television writer to marry him and have their baby. Unhappy with her new life, she constantly leaves her baby with the nanny and spends her days shopping for expensive things she doesn't need. She accidentally meets Teddy, an addict and alcoholic with hepatitis who plays bass for a cover band. Violet decides that this man who has nothing to offer is her dream man. Meanwhile, David's sister, Sally is pushing 40 and desperate for a husband, so she browbeats a socially inept man who does sports commentary to become her fiance. Maria Semple's debut novel has received mostly positive reviews with the New York Observer saying, "Almost everyone gets what's coming to them, including a shot at redemption-which is unsurprising. What is surprising is that the reader cares at all for these hapless creatures, and that, in our era of schadenfreude as public sport, the novel's mostly happy ending is . . . deeply satisfying."
