Tourmaline by Joanna Scott
Tourmaline is set in 1956, when Murray Murdoch moves his wife and kids to the island of Elba off the Italian coast. His plan was to buy up land and make his fortune mining precious minerals, including tourmaline. Murray's own bumbling and incompetence impede his progress and then the disappearance of a young woman he knew makes the locals suspicious that he was involved in some way. As Murray falls into his own emotional prison and his wife pulls into herself, their four boys forge their own adventures exploring the island unhindered by adults. It's a novel about memories, families, and each person's search for the truth about their past and the acceptance of their present situation. Tourmaline is a well-written, thoughtful novel.
