Two Caravans by Marina Lewycka
Two Caravans refers to the living quarters for a group of migrant workers working as strawberry pickers in Kent. They're a motley group consisting of immigrants from a variety of countries. Irina has newly arrived from the Ukraine and who has caught the eye of the other Ukrainian worker, Andriy. Yola, the Polish supervisor, is having an affair with the farmer. Marta is Yola's niece and Tomasz is infatuated with Yola. In addition there is Emmanuel from Malawi, two Chinese girls, and a dog named Dog. With their mix of broken English and different cultures, their adventures, both comical and serious, reflect the experience of those who are willing to do the work that the locals find beneath them. Marina Lewycka's novel has received mostly positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "Two Caravans is funny, clever and well-observed."
