Uncommon Carriers by John McPhee
In Uncommon Carriers, John McPhee explores the world of conveyances. Using seven different chapters, he examines long haul trucking, coal trains, tugboats, and canoes, filling his narratives with enough trivia and detail to immerse the reader in the situations he describes. It's a mixture of awe for the technology that moves goods around the world and the people behind them. He visits the mammoth UPS shipping depot in Louisville, following the path of perishable lobster from Nova Scotia through its miles of automated sorting conveyor belts until its on its way to its eventual delivery. Uncommon Carriers has received positive reviews with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch saying, "Uncommon Carriers is an uncommonly fine bit of writing."
