The Uncoupling by Meg Wolitzer
The Uncoupling is set in Stellar Plains, N.J., and a new teacher at the high school wants to stage the play Lysistrata, the ancient Greek play where the women refuse to have sex with their men until they end the Peloponnesian War. As rehearsals begin in this suburban community, the women who are involved in the school discover that they've lost all interest in sex. This puts a strain on all their intimate relationships, including those couples who've been happily married for a long time. The men react in different ways to their new celibacy, and the women begin to examine their own lives as well. Meg Wolitzer's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Associated Press saying, "Though the veracity of the story becomes slightly shaky halfway through, as if it cannot withstand the paranormal activity at play, the real pull of The Uncoupling is the breadth and depth of female emotion and sexual expression, dazzlingly rendered in Wolitzer's crisp prose."
