The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris
In The Unnamed, Tim Farnsworth is a wealthy lawyer living a comfortable life. He suffers from an unnamed affliction that causes him to stop whatever he's doing and walk to the point of exhaustion. His wife, Jane, will then drive to wherever he reaches his end and bring him home. This disease comes and goes, but it finally returns and refuses to loosen its grip on him. Unable to find a cure, or even a diagnosis, Tim leaves home and sinks deep into madness as he spends his days walking endlessly. Jane tries to save him, but he won't let her. It isn't until Jane falls ill that Tim decides he must come home. But he has to survive the long walk to get there. Joshua Ferris' novel has received mixed reviews with the San Francisco Chronicle saying, "At once riveting, horrifying and deeply sad, The Unnamed, like Tim's feet, moves with a propulsion all its own. This is fiction with the force of an avalanche, snowballing unstoppably until it finally comes to rest - when we come to the end, so to speak."
