Venus as a Boy by Luke Sutherland
Venus as a Boy tells the story of a young man who we first meet near the end of his life. By then he is called Désirée, and his skin is slowly turning to gold. His childhood was in the Orkney Islands, full of parental neglect, violence, and subjugation. Désirée possesses the ability to generate such sexual elation in others that they can see angels. Yet this ability doesn't necessarily allow him to find love. Luke Sutherland's novel is of a man who can bring love and ecstasy and visions of heaven to others, but whose time has been mostly spent in the gutters of life. Venus as a Boy has received all around positive reviews with the San Francisco Chronicle saying, " Sutherland . . . has fashioned a modern-day fable about the meaning of goodness and the power of love, about the extraordinary things that happen when the sacred and the profane collide."
