The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier

The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier is the story of two different women who live 500 years apart in the same area of southwestern France. In the 1500s, Isabelle Tournier is a 5-year old girl whose hair turns coppery red after the sunlight reflects off a statue of the Virgin Mary standing in a niche of a deep blue color. She is feared by her townspeople and grows up as an outsider, and is then driven out of the country after marrying a Huguenot. Her descendant, Ella Turner, returns to the same village in the 20th century, and finds herself again the outsider as an American. Her research of her ancestors' history and romance with the local librarian ties the two stories together. The Virgin Blue has received mostly positive reviews. The Washingtonian Magazine says, "The skillful way Chevalier intertwines the women's stories makes the book ultimately rewarding."
