Was It Beautiful? by Alison McGhee
William T. Jones's contented life falls apart around him. His musician son, William J. Jones, goes deaf and dies when he's hit by a train in what could have been suicide. His wife divorces him, he loses his job, and his cherished cat dies. His life, apparently completely dissolved around him, must be either rebuilt or given up altogether. It's the kindness and love of the remaining people in his life that give him hope. Alison McGhee's novel has received mixed reviews but the Minneapolis Star Tribune says, "She brilliantly captures the close but guarded ties between residents of a grieving small town, and delivers dialogue with the uncommon and impressive mix of precision, poignancy and believability."
