When Madeline Was Young by Jane Hamilton

The Madeline in When Madeline Was Young was a young newlywed when a bicycle accident leaves her with brain damage and the intellectual level of a 7-year old. She becomes a ward of her husband, Aaron, who remarries again to Julia. They tend to Madeline every day without complaint while raising their own two children. Their son, Mac, narrates this novel, watching over the course of his life his parents' devotion to Madeline, as well as watching his aunt's family, especially his cousin, Bud, choose a different path and perspective for their lives. Jane Hamilton's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Deseret Morning News saying, "In the end, this is a nicely written book. It's a good read and may even be an important book - even though it's not a wrenching one."
