White by Marie Darrieussecq
White is set in the year 2015 where the Europeans are trying to establish a permanent base in the heart of Antarctica. Edmee is a French woman raised in Canada and living in the U.S. before leaving for Antarctica, and Peter is from Iceland. Both of them are also fleeing personal problems and are attracted by the nothingness at the bottom of the world where they can lose themselves. It's a place full of ghosts: Scott, Amundsen, Shackleton, and others who have been there before them. In this most inhospitable of environments, Edmee and Peter turn to each other in an attempt to bring meaning to their own lives, unless they also join the community of ghosts. Marie Darrieussecq's novel has received positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "White shows Darrieussecq at her imaginative and poetic best. It takes time to enter fully into this world of snow, ice and nothingness, but after 10 or so pages, the reader is enthralled."
