White Doves at Morning by James Lee Burke

James Lee Burke is famous for his detective novels set in Louisiana, but he steps out of his usual genre to write a Civil War novel. Also set in Louisiana, White Doves at Morning is a broad story centered around plantation owner Ira Jamison, his daughter, Flower, whose mother was killed trying to run away, Willie Burke who runs a boarding house, Abigail Downing, an abolitionist from the north, and Robert Perry, the son of a slave owner. The war turns all their worlds upside down, from the emotional upheaval on the plantation to realistic battle scenes. The Washington Post calls White Doves at Morning "a violent, lyrical and engrossing account of unhappy endings that still haunt our nation."
