Willing by Scott Spencer
In Willing, Avery Jankowsky is a struggling, slightly neurotic, 37-seven-year-old Manhattan freelance writer whose world implodes when his twentysomething girlfriend has an affair. He has lunch with his Uncle Ezra who decides Avery should use the tickets he's bought for a European sex tour. Avery sells a book proposal about the tour and embarks with a group for European capitals. The other men on the tour have all paid $135,000 each and include an ex-pro basketball player, a business magnate, and a lottery winner. Events don't come off as planned and Avery isn't sure whether to be repulsed or inspired by the tour, until he meets someone he never expected. Scott Spencer's novel has received mixed reviews with BookPage saying, "Spencer's sumptuous prose adds much to the pleasure of this novel's provocative, and often disturbing, story. His elaborate and hilarious verbal riffs recall some of Philip Roth's writing at its best. Willing doesn't flinch in exposing one seamy corner of a world where everything can be bought and sold - for the right price."
