A Winter Marriage by Kerry Hardie

In A Winter Marriage, Irish poet Kerry Hardie tells the story of Hannie Bennett, a woman in need of a husband to support her. After the death of her latest husband, she sets her sites on Ned Renvyle, a widower for almost forty years. Their marriage of convenience becomes strained as her teenage son arrives to live with them and other secrets from Hannie's past begin to surface. She also feels out of place in the isolated Irish farm they live and the drab friends that Ned has built into his life. It's a novel that explores love, friendship, loyalty, and parenthood. While A Winter Marriage hasn't received praise from all reviewers, the Denver Post says, "though tranquility is not the fruit of this particular harvest, admiration for a new author who can make the reader think, wonder and argue very much is."
