The Wonder Spot by Melissa Bank

With The Wonder Spot, Melissa Bank follows the same successful style that made her previous novel, The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing a huge success. It's eight stories set in different times of the life of Sophie Applebaum, from middle school through her late 20s. She's a woman full of self-deprecating quips, unlucky (perhaps incompetent) at love, and she struggles through a professional life in publishing and advertising. Her relationship with her family, especially her brothers, is the emotional anchor that allows Sophie to take chances in life, often with humorous results. The Wonder Spot has received mostly positive reviews with the Chicago Sun-Times saying, "The Wonder Spot was well worth the wait, and we can hope the smart Sophie Applebaum will finally depose Bridget Jones as reigning queen of single women. Jones is someone you might meet in a bar and have a few laughs with; Applebaum has the staying power of a true friend."
